What is St. Andrew's Day?
St. Andrew's Day is the feast day of Andrew the Apostle and is celebrated every year in Scotland on the 30 November. In 1320, St. Andrew officially became the patron saint of Scotland when the country's independence was declared with the signing of The Declaration of Arbroath. |

Happy Hogmanay!
Hogmanay, the Scots word for the last day of the year, is synonymous with the celebration of the New Year in the Scottish manner. It is typically followed by further celebration on the morning of New Year’s Day (1 January) or, in some cases, 2 January — a Scottish bank holiday. Hogmanay is widely celebrated throughout Scotland – more so than even Christmas.
The origins of Hogmanay are unclear, but it may have derived from Norse and Gaelic observances. Customs vary throughout Scotland and usually include gift-giving and visiting the homes of friends and neighbors, with particular attention given to the first footer, the first guest of the New Year. Tradition has it that if a home’s first-footer has dark hair, it bodes well for the New Year. In addition, when visiting friends and neighbors, one often brings gifts of coal, scotch whiskey, and shortbread, intended to bring warmth, luck, and prosperity to the household. Another Hogmanay tradition is the singing of Auld Lang Syne as midnight turns into the New Year. The Executive Board of the St. Andrews Society of the Inland Northwest wishes you all a Happy Hogmanay! |

National Tartan Day Observance
A reminder that April 6 is National Tartan Day. National Tartan Day is commemorated in the United States, Canada, and Australia. It honors the contributions of those of Scottish descent to their adopted country. Over 11 million Americans claim Scottish or Irish descent, and history is replete with the names of Scottish people who have made their mark and influenced events. The date was chosen to coincide with the Declaration of Arbroath, a document signed on April 6, 1320. The Declaration was a stirring appeal to the Pope to recognize Scottish independence and is the forerunner of the U.S. Declaration of Independence: “For it is not glory, riches or honour that we fight, but for freedom alone, that which no man yields up, save with his life.”
