National Tartan Day Observance
A reminder that April 6 is National Tartan Day. National Tartan Day is commemorated in the United States, Canada, and Australia. It honors the contributions of those of Scottish descent to their adopted country. Over 11 million Americans claim Scottish or Irish descent, and history is replete with the names of Scottish people who have made their mark and influenced events. The date was chosen to coincide with the Declaration of Arbroath, a document signed on April 6, 1320. The Declaration was a stirring appeal to the Pope to recognize Scottish independence and is the forerunner of the U.S. Declaration of Independence: “For it is not glory, riches or honour that we fight, but for freedom alone, that which no man yields up, save with his life.”
We will be hosting the 2025 National Tartan Day at the Shadle Library. Due to scheduling conflicts, the celebration will be hosted on April 12th.
